Thank you, Mr. Air, a netizen of CTOnews.com, for your clue delivery! CTOnews.com, December 14, according to The Elec, Samsung transferred 98 patents it owns in the United States to Huawei last month. With 81 patents handed over by Samsung to Huawei in 2019, the South Korean company has so far transferred a total of 179 patents to Huawei.

Samsung and Huawei signed a cross-licensing agreement in 2019 to end their patent disputes. The number of patents transferred by Samsung to Huawei may be the same as the difference in their cross-license agreement.

This is likely to have something to do with the renewal of the agreement. The scope of patents transferred includes patents related to telecommunications, charging, cameras, displays and other related patents. American family patents registered in South Korea have also been transferred.

In a cross-license agreement, due to the differences in the quantity and quality of patents, one party sometimes pays more license fees than the other party.

Xiaomi and Microsoft signed a similar cross-license agreement in 2016, and Xiaomi is likely to pay more because it has fewer patents.

The patent dispute between Samsung and Huawei involves patents related to telecommunications, and Huawei owns more patents. Samsung is likely to be transferring patents because the cross-license agreement mainly involves 5G patents and has fewer patents than China.

Huawei has been increasing its patent licensing revenue since various factors cracked down on and spun off the Glory smartphone brand.

CTOnews.com learned that Huawei and Samsung Group have also reached a cross-license agreement for their respective standard essential patent packages after Huawei recently announced a global patent cross-licensing agreement with OPPO Guangdong Mobile Communications Co., Ltd for 5G standard and other necessary patent technologies.

Patent cross-licensing usually means that two or more patentees grant their respective patent enforcement licenses to each other under certain conditions. Patent cross-licensing reflects the parties' respect for intellectual property rights and reduces the cost of patent use, which is conducive to promoting technology exchange and research and development, and providing better products to the market.
