CTOnews.com, December 14, South Korea's Ministry of Land and Transport announced that KASS (Korea Augmentation Satellite System, South Korea Satellite Navigation Enhancement system) will be put into operation on December 15. The system aims to reduce the range of satellite positioning errors to 1 to 1.6 m in order to provide more accurate position information services.

CTOnews.com learned that South Korea's KASS plans to launch in 2014, with a R & D investment of 128 billion won (about 685 million yuan), and currently has at least seven reference stations, two satellite communication stations and two control stations.

It is reported that South Korea launched the first satellite of the system in June this year and tested it with the Korea Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. According to the test results, the error range has been greatly reduced to about 1 m.

According to reports, the Ministry is planning to discuss with private enterprises and government agencies how to make better use of it, which is expected to be combined with car navigation systems, drones, smartphones and so on.

Experts explained that "in combination with smartphones, KASS can improve the accuracy and accuracy of car navigation, taxi hailing, parking, etc.," he added. "in addition, it will also be of great help in urban air traffic, self-driving, emergency rescue, agriculture and so on."

The department also said that if the plan goes well, it will lease the satellite as No. 2 for the construction of the navigation system in 2025, launch the independently developed No. 3 satellite (Qianliyan 3) in 2027, and launch No. 4 and No. 5 satellites respectively from 2034 to 2035.
