CTOnews.com, December 13 (Xinhua)-- Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has successfully developed a new type of "paper-thin" solar photovoltaic cells that can be applied to a variety of surfaces to produce highly integrated multi-functional solar energy. The battery uses nanomaterials in the form of printable electronic ink to deposit the electronic material layer on a prepared peelable substrate with a thickness of only 3 microns, and uses screen printing to deposit electrodes on the structure to complete the solar module.

CTOnews.com learned that researchers could then peel printing modules about 15 microns thick from plastic substrates to form ultra-light solar devices. The researchers then attached the device to a lightweight material commercially called Dyneema, which weighs only 13 grams per square meter.

These batteries have not yet expanded to the industrial manufacturing level and need to be wrapped in another protective material to prevent them from degraded once exposed to the environment. MIT says the carbon-based organic materials used in the manufacturing process may change through interaction with water and oxygen, thus damaging their performance.

The study claims that these modules can generate 730W / kg power independently under test conditions and about 370W / kg when deployed on Dyneema fabrics.

Mayuran Saravanapavanantham, one of the researchers, said that the development team is currently trying to encapsulate the solar cell in thick glass, which may add some weight but can help explore future commercial solutions.
