Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen Coje_He for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com, December 12 (Xinhua)-- Google is aggressively promoting the controversial Manifest V3 extension and will phase out the Manifest V2 extension in June next year.
Recently, Google Chrome officially announced that it will once again delay the phase-out of the Manifest V2 extension, saying that it will provide developers with solutions to migration challenges through new features, bug fixes and sufficient adoption time.
Google said that extension developers have problems such as Service Worker's inability to use DOM features and hard life limits during the migration process, and are using Offscreen Documents API (added in Chrome 109) to alleviate the former and actively seek solutions to the latter.
As a result, Google has postponed all experiments in January and will evaluate all downstream milestone versions. Google said it hoped to hear more about the updated phase-out plan and schedule by March 2023, so the current phase-out time for Manifest V2 has yet to be determined.
CTOnews.com learned that other major web browsers are also beginning to adapt to the Manifest V3 extension standard, and Microsoft Edge browser decided to follow Google and start phasing out Manifest V2 while promoting Manifest V3.
Firefox browsers will fully embrace Manifest V3 by the end of 2022, and the new feature is now being tested. Starting from November 21, 2022, Firefox browsers will open the submission of Manifest V3 extensions, and the retirement time of Manifest V2 will be announced after subsequent evaluation.
It is worth mentioning that one of the most controversial changes in MV3 is the removal of Web Request API to support the new declarative network request API (Declarative Net Request API). Developers have criticized the change a lot because it deprives many extended features and reduces efficiency, represented by Google's Chrome browser. While Mozilla chooses to keep Web Request API, it also supports declarative network requests.
