According to BMW, the deployment of the AI platform has provided a "super brain" for the production and operation of enterprises, injecting new momentum into BMW's digital development in China. This is another important milestone in the process of digital transformation of BMW Group in China after the landing of BMW iFACTORY production strategy in Shenyang in June.

CTOnews.com learned that the name BEACON is an acronym for BMW (BMW), E2P (emerging technology to product), AI Algorithm (artificial intelligence algorithm), Computer Vision (computer vision), OR (object recognition) and NLP (natural language processing). This is also the main technical module included in the AI platform at present. Different from the common AI single point applications in the industry, the "lighthouse" platform is like a "super brain", which combines the advantages of AI and the industrial Internet of things, enables AI to enable multiple levels of technology applications, and effectively solves the problems faced by traditional AI scattered applications, such as high threshold, high cost, low efficiency and so on.

For example, a BMW IT engineer in Nanjing needs to develop an AI application. She / he does not need to set up a local data center with some computing power, but as long as he inputs the code and parameters that need to be trained online to the "lighthouse" platform, the startup task can obtain computing resources and carry out algorithm training. In this process, the computing resources she / he uses can be released to other developers at any time, and there is no worry that the project will be idle and wasted. And she / he can also run the developed AI application on the "lighthouse" platform without having to bear the related hardware operation and maintenance costs. This significantly reduces the equipment requirements and barriers for digital development.

It is also understood that at present, BMW Shenyang production base has been online about 100 kinds of AI applications. The brilliance Baominda plant, which was completed in June 2022, is equipped with a data center covering an area of about 3500 square meters and a gigabit 5G network covering the whole plant. All these provide a stage for the "Lighthouse" platform.

The "Lighthouse" platform also has strong versatility and scalability. For example, natural language processing algorithms developed for some production scenarios may be used to support the development of in-car speech recognition products, or even to develop AI subtitle generation programs for internal video conferencing. In the future, more technical modules will be added to the "Lighthouse" platform. Block chain, quantum computing and multimodal fusion have been the key technical directions of E2P.
