CTOnews.com, December 11, according to Liaoning Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Mr. Yang Zhenyu, a famous rice expert in China, founder of japonica hybrid rice, winner of Liaoning Provincial Scientific and technological Merit Award, and researcher of Rice Institute of Liaoning Academy of Agricultural Sciences, died at 05:09 in Liaoning Provincial people's Hospital on December 8, 2022 at the age of 95.

According to public data, Yang Zhenyu was born in Fengcheng, Jiangxi Province in November 1927, was admitted to Fudan University in Shanghai in September 1949, joined the army from Fudan University in Shanghai in January 1951, and successively served as soldiers, cadets and radio personnel in the Air pre-General Association of the people's Liberation Army in Hangzhou, the first Aviation School of the Chinese people's Liberation Army, and the Northwest Air Force of the Chinese people's Liberation Army. He studied agronomy in Shenyang Agricultural University from August 1954 to December 1957. He has been engaged in the scientific research of hybrid japonica rice in the Rice Research Institute of Liaoning Academy of Agricultural Sciences since he graduated in January 1958. He has served as the moderator of the national "863" project, the director of the Northern Japonica Hybrid Rice Engineering and Technology Center, the director of the academic committee of the Rice Institute, and the director of the hybrid rice breeding research office. He also served as a member of the hybrid rice expert advisory group of the Ministry of Agriculture, a member of the sixth CPPCC Liaoning Provincial Committee, vice chairman of Liaoning Provincial Association for Science and Technology, and scientific adviser of Shenyang Municipal Government. He retired in November 2000.

In practice, the series combination of Pei'ai 64s between two subspecies was cultivated and demonstrated in a large area in Huang-Huai-Hai region. The restorer line C418 of hybrid japonica rice was bred in the 1980s, which further enriches the connotation of "indica-japonica bridge" theory and makes the northern hybrid japonica rice to a new level. In the 1990s, Guangzhan 63s male sterile line and its series combinations were bred, with a cumulative extension area of more than 5000 million mu. In 2001, the research on "theories and methods of Japonica Hybrid Rice breeding and the breeding and Application of backbone parents" won the first prize for scientific and technological progress of Liaoning Provincial Government. In 2013, the research project of "two-line hybrid rice technology research and application" won the national special prize for scientific and technological progress.

In the 1980s, hybrid japonica rice was transferred to 14 countries such as the United States and Japan in the form of technical patents, and then was repeatedly invited to Japan, the Philippines, the United States and other countries for investigation, technical guidance and cooperative exchanges of hybrid japonica rice. so that China's advanced hybrid japonica rice technology to the world, has played an important role in the world rice production.

Yuan Longping, "father of hybrid rice", academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and winner of the Medal of the Republic, died at 13:07 on May 22, 2021, in Changsha, Hunan, at the age of 91. With the death of Yang Zhenyu, the legend of "South Yuan and North Yang" in China's rice industry is gone, but their exploits will remain in people's hearts forever.
