Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, December 10 (Xinhua)-- according to DSCC's latest issue of "Biannual Augment and Virtual Reality Display Technologies and Market Report," AR / VR will show revenue of $942 million in 2022.
Despite the current global economic downturn, the long-term outlook shown by AR / VR remains positive, with revenue expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 50.7 per cent and reach $7.3 billion by 2027.
2022 was a challenging year for AR / VR manufacturers, with Meta lowering its sales target and Sony postponing the release of the PlayStation VR2 until February next year. Total shipments of headwear and smart glasses are still expected to increase by 11.5% compared with 2021. According to the report, AMOLED panels have already started shipping Sony headwear products, so they have contributed to panel revenue this year.
AMOLED has been losing market share because its pixel density cannot compete with high-resolution LCD panels. The panel of the PlayStation VR2 will reach 850 PPI, which is a significant improvement over the 615PPI of previous AMOLED helmets such as Oculus Quest 1 and HTC Vive Pro. Samsung shows that it has developed a new process to achieve this level of pixel density, and it can be speculated that the pattern technology is based on lithography, and although advanced FMM is also possible (as APS Research introduced at the AR / VR display forum), it remains to be seen whether other brands will use high-resolution AMOLED in future headwear, the report said.
LCD can still easily beat AMOLED in pixels. The recently launched panels of Meta Quest Pro and Pico 4 are 1050PPI and 1200PPI, respectively. Some LCD panel manufacturers even show products that surpass 2000PPI. In order to exceed this level, a micro display made on a CMOS silicon-based backplane must be used.
DSCC expects shipments of micro-display headsets for silicon-based OLED (SiOLED) to begin next year. After that, Apple is likely to release a more affordable headwear for consumers, but there is some uncertainty about the display configuration. We think Apple will stick with SiOLED and push suppliers to reduce the cost of displays. Meta may also consider using SiOLED technology for second-generation Quest Pro. Under this assumption, SiOLED's revenue could reach as much as $1.3 billion next year and double by 2024.
CTOnews.com learned that for perspective AR products, most companies developing smart glasses seem to be betting on MicroLED technology, and only Magic Leap uses LCoS. Meta was one of the first companies to recognize the importance of MicroLED and has been investing in the technology for several years. Vuzix still plans to release its first MicroLED smart glasses, which currently focus only on monochromatic images. Some smart glasses products being developed by Chinese brands are also considering using SiOLED display, and DSCC expects SiOLED to have the largest market share of AR / VR display from 2025.
