Support for Win8.1 devices will be discontinued on January 10, 2023, and Microsoft will no longer provide the following services

Software update

Security update or repair

Although you can continue to use computers running Windows 8.1, without ongoing software and security updates, your computer will be at greater risk of viruses and malware. We recommend upgrading to a version of Windows that is still supported. A new device that runs Windows 11 allows you to transition easily and get a good experience.

So what will be the impact of software and games after Win8.1 stops supporting it?

Win8 and Win8.1 are the first Windows versions of built-in Microsoft Store. Although this model has not been recognized by users at the initial stage of launch, there are still some users in use.

After Win8.1 stops supporting, apps and games downloaded and installed through Microsoft Store can still be used normally. And Microsoft allows developers to continue to provide updates to Win8.1 applications until June 30, 2023. Naturally, Microsoft stressed that Win8.1 had better upgrade to Win11 if it wants the best application and gaming experience.

Microsoft explained in its official FAQ:

Until January 10, 2023, Win8.1 devices can still update and download applications and games through Microsoft Store. After that date, apps and games that have been installed on Win8.1 devices can still be used normally.

After January 10, 2023, Win8.1 devices will not be able to update and purchase any applications and games through Microsoft Store. Apps and games already installed on Win8.1 devices will still be updated by vendors until June 2023 (vendor support is required).

After June 2023, these apps and games will no longer be updated, and the quality and availability of applications may decline. Microsoft recommends that users upgrade Win10 / Win11 to keep using these apps and games.
