CTOnews.com, December 9 (Xinhua)-- Mercedes-Benz hopes to produce 1 million electric drives a year for its EQ brand models from 2024, doubling current production by increasing production at Germany's Unterturkheim and Bad Cannstatt plants.

Mercedes-Benz hopes to become an all-electric brand by 2030, "as long as market conditions permit". In this strategy, the Unterturkheim plant near Stuttgart, Germany, will transition to a "pure electric" role.

Today, the Unterturkheim plant produces engines and gearboxes, as well as batteries and axles for plug-in hybrids and all-electric Mercedes-EQ models such as EQS and EQB, but in the future it will also be responsible for electric drive components, which will be produced at the new affiliated plant.

"the transformation of the Unterturkheim base is making great strides forward. Through efficient drives and batteries, we are adapting the Unterturkheim plant to the needs of the future. In the future, we will be able to provide 1 million Mercedes-EQ electronic drives to the car factory. Expansion will begin in 2024."

Construction of new assembly lines at the Unterturkheim and Bad Cannstatt plants will begin in 2023, with Mercedes-Benz providing "comprehensive training and retraining programs for local employees".

The German luxury brand launched the EQ series of all-electric cars and the Generation EQ concept car in 2016, but the company first experimented with battery-powered vehicles in the 1900s, the Mercer é d è s Electrique in 1906. Over the years, Mercedes-Benz has tried electric cars through prototypes of buses, Vans, station wagons, cars and city cars.

CTOnews.com learned that Mercedes-Benz's first mass-produced EQ was the EQE SUV launched in 2019, followed by a range of sedans, crossovers and Vans, increasing the total number of models available to 10 in just a few years.
