CTOnews.com, December 9 (Xinhua)-- Microsoft announced today that Microsoft Authenticator applications have met the requirements of the Federal Information processing Standard (FIPS 140) of the United States. This means that the identity authentication application can use encryption technology that has been reviewed by US federal agencies. This is a very important milestone for Microsoft and means that the app can be officially used by federal agencies in the United States.

CTOnews.com has learned that at present, only Microsoft Authenticator applications with iOS version 6.68or above comply with the FIPS 140standard by default and can be used for Azure Active Directory (AAD) authentication without configuration by IT administrators.

It is suitable for customers who use push multi-factor authentication (MFA), password-less phone login (PSI), and time-based one-time password (TOTP). Microsoft says the Android version will be released later, but the exact time is not yet clear. Microsoft points out that the app implements the FIPS 140 standard through Apple's local encryption module CryptoCore on iOS.

CTOnews.com learned that FIPS is an acronym for the Federal Information processing Standard (Federal Information Processing Standard). Based on the United States Information Technology Governance Reform Act, the Secretary of Commerce approved the standards and guidelines for federal computer systems developed by the National Standards and Technology Commission (NIST).

These standards and guidelines are issued by NIST and are widely adopted by government agencies as Federal Information processing Standards (FIPS). NIST develops FIPS standards for mandatory federal government requirements, such as security and interoperability, and FIPS standards for those that have not yet developed acceptable industrial standards or solutions.
