CTOnews.com news on December 8, Epic Games announced that restricted accounts are now available. This is a new type of Epic account that will provide a safe and inclusive customized experience for young players using malls and launchers, while ensuring that they can still play games such as Fortnite, Sugar Pac Man and Rocket League.

CTOnews.com learned that when players from around the world log in to Epic Mall or Epic games, they will see an one-time prompt asking about their age when it comes to restricting the operation of their accounts. If your age does not meet the requirements, your Epic account will become a restricted account, and you will need to provide the email of a parent or guardian to start the parental permission process.

You can continue to use the Epic Games launcher, but you need to set up parental controls before you can use specific features. When your parents set up parental control, your play experience will follow the options they set, and your account will no longer be a restricted account.

For restricted accounts, the following features will be disabled:

Use voice chat or free text chat to communicate with other players

Use real money to buy goods

Download games that are not owned by Epic

Recommendations based on past activities

Email advertisement or push notification

Trade in "Rocket League"

Login using Epic, including associating accounts to specific external services, such as social networking sites or video streaming applications

Custom display name

Dual authentication based on SMS

While restricted account status awaits parents' permission, young players or developers using the Epic Game Mall launcher can view and use their game libraries, but will not be able to access new games or use specific Unreal engine features.

Players will be able to use features that are not available on restricted accounts by asking their parents or guardians to grant permission and complete account settings, or by growing up to 13 (or the digital adult age in their area). Players can re-email their parents or guardians to request permission by going to the Epic account portal and following the steps under the request for parental permission.
