On December 8th, Thomas Sefer, head of the Volkswagen brand, said on Wednesday local time that the company would invest 460 million euros ($482 million) in a plant in Wolfsburg, where Germany is headquartered, in early 2025, most of which would be used to produce the compact electric car ID.3.

Sefer revealed that when the Wolfsburg plant starts full production of the ID.3 in early 2025, the plant will use its own pure electric vehicle platform MEB to produce another compact all-electric SUV.

Volkswagen also said that the MEB integrates the structure and design of the electric vehicle, and the company is now upgrading it to a MEB+, that will allow the electric vehicle to charge faster and have a longer range.

Volkswagen's Wolfsburg plant, which employs about 60,000 workers, mainly produces models such as golf, Tuguan and Tuan. Restructuring the factory to produce electric cars has become the top agenda of the factory. Many people worry that if they do not do so, the Fort worth plant may be out of date in the process of electrifying cars.

Annual production at Volkswagen's Fort worth plant has been spiralling since 2015, falling sharply from a peak of 800000 cars to less than 400000 a year.

Mr Sefer said on Tuesday that Volkswagen still faced "extreme chaos" in its supply chain, with many suppliers canceling major orders overnight.

He said at the time that Volkswagen would decide by February whether to build a brand new Trinity electric car at the Wolfsburg plant or a new plant nearby to produce the new car.

Sefer said on Wednesday that it would use Volkswagen's existing electric vehicle platform to produce the new electric SUV.

"this is the largest car segment in the world, and our beloved Touguan also belongs to it. The new models will enrich our electric vehicle portfolio and expand our market position based on our already best-selling models such as ID.4 and ID.5."

ID.3 's production schedule is on the right track and is expected to achieve partial mass production in 2023 and full production in 2024.
