Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
Ramesh Barvani, former chief operating officer and president of Theranos, a company that tested cancer in blood, was sentenced to nearly 13 years in prison on Wednesday for fraud, Beijing time reported. Earlier, the break-up of the blood test giant triggered criminal charges against Barvani and founder Elizabeth Elizabeth Holmes, who were sentenced to more than 11 years in prison on November 8.
During the sentencing trial, Barvani's lawyer tried to blame Holmes. "decisions are made by Holmes," he told US magistrate Howard Davila.
Davila set a sentencing range of 11 years, 3 months to 14 years. However, prosecutors sought to sentence Barvani to 15 years in prison because of his "important" leadership role in Theranos's operations. The final guiding sentence is 155 months' imprisonment, suspended for three years.
Balvani and Holmes were lovers who jointly contributed to the rapid rise of Theranos, attracting a range of supporters from the DeVos family to news mogul Rupert Murdoch. However, Murdoch's media first reported violations of Theranos's so-called revolutionary blood tester.
As chief operating officer, Barvani is in charge of the company's laboratory operations and finance. During his tenure, Theranos has committed a number of violations, including forged documents and erroneous test results.
In a message to Holmes, Barvani said: "I am responsible for everything about Theranos." He bears a wide range of responsibilities in the day-to-day operation of the company.
Theranos claims that its blood tester can complete the test with just a few drops of blood and can perform more than 1000 tests. In fact, according to media reports, Theranos's instrument can only carry out more than a dozen tests. Media reports eventually led to the collapse of the company in 2018, and Barvani and Holmes were subsequently arrested on fraud charges.
Barvani's sentence marks the end of the Theranos saga. The company attracted a lot of public attention, and the story was made into a documentary and brought new treatments. Theranos has attracted many big-name investors, and its founder, once thought to be Apple's Steve Jobs, once represented the pinnacle of creativity in Silicon Valley.
The light of Barvani and Holmes quickly faded after the Theranos scandal. They were in a relationship for most of the time they led Theranos's development. But Holmes accused Barvani of abusing the court process and provided text messages and notes about their relationship as evidence. Holmes' lawyer has said that Barvani committed "a 10-year psychological abuse". He is nearly 20 years older than Holmes.
