Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

On the morning of December 8, Beijing time, it was reported that the virtual reality head of US social media giant Meta had been forced to stop selling in Germany after the government's antitrust intervention. According to the latest news, Meta's virtual reality headset is ready to go back to retail stores in Germany for the first time in two years.

Meta released an official blog post on Wednesday local time saying that its virtual reality headset "Meta Quest 2" would be sold in retail stores in Germany before Christmas. In addition, consumers who buy this hardware do not need to provide a Facebook account (Meta's mainstream social platform).

Earlier, the Federal Cartel Office, the German government's antitrust agency, reached an agreement with Meta to allow users of virtual reality hardware to log in using separate accounts outside the Facebook platform. Last month, the Federal Cartel Office announced that it had once again approved Meta to sell virtual reality headsets in Germany.

In 2020, the German Supreme Court upheld the charge made by the government's antitrust department that Facebook (the old name of Meta) required users to log in to virtual reality devices using their own platform's account, which was an abuse of market dominance. Subsequently, Facebook stopped selling these products in Germany.

Shortly afterwards, Andreas Mundt, director of the German Federal Cartel Office, said in a statement that Facebook had responded to the German government's concerns after negotiations between the two sides, and as a solution to the antitrust problem, the company agreed to give users of Quest virtual reality devices another option, namely to create a separate account system outside the Facebook platform.

Although the issue of user accounts has been resolved, in an November statement, the Federal Cartel Office said it was also looking at another antitrust issue involving Meta, namely, whether and how user data are exchanged between Meta's different Internet services.
