Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen Savokiii for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com, December 7 (Xinhua)-- Tesla told the Federal Communications Commission that the company plans to install a new radar in its cars from next month, according to Electrek. The move has raised concerns that its hardware suite may need to be updated to achieve its promised autopilot capabilities.

Since 2016, Tesla has claimed that all its future vehicles have "all the necessary hardware" and will drive themselves through future software updates. Tesla believes that the best way to achieve autopilot is to use a camera as the only sensor. The logic is that roads are designed by humans to operate cars through vision (eyes) and biological neural networks (brains). The best way to replicate this situation is to replace the eye with a camera and the brain through a neural network running on the computer.

Tesla canceled the radar on his vehicle last year and ultrasonic sensors earlier this year.

It was surprising that Tesla applied to the Federal Communications Commission to use the new radar on his vehicle earlier this year. The Federal Communications Commission of the United States has given Tesla confidentiality treatment so as not to release the details of the new radar. These secrets, which are usually kept for six months, will expire tomorrow, but Tesla has applied for an extension.

In the application, Tesla also confirmed that the company plans to start selling the new radar "in mid-January".

CTOnews.com learned that Tesla CEO Elon Musk said after Tesla stopped using his radar in June last year that the security level of pure vision will be higher than vision + radar, and vision has become very good.

However, Musk also said that if Tesla had a "very high resolution radar", he might still use radar, he said: "A very high resolution radar will be better than pure vision, but such radar does not exist. I mean, vision with high-resolution radar is better than pure vision."

It seems that what Musk mentioned last year may happen. Tesla is preparing to install a more advanced radar in his vehicle and possibly a new sensor kit on the new Model 3 prototype.

However, this has raised concerns that with the current hardware of the vehicle, Tesla may not be able to achieve his promised self-driving ability. Tesla is likely to launch a new set of self-driving hardware next month, just to improve its performance, while Tesla still plans to provide autopilot on the current hardware.
