Beijing, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) Apple CEO Tim Cook (Tim Cook) confirmed Tuesday that Apple will make chips in the United States for the first time in nearly a decade. This is a key step for the company to reduce its dependence on Asian manufacturing.

Cook, along with US President Joe Biden and executives of other chip companies such as AMD, attended the equipment transfer ceremony at TSMC's Phoenix plant on Tuesday, symbolically moving the first batch of equipment into the new $12 billion plant. In his speech, Cook said Apple will expand its cooperation with TSMC when TSMC's US plant opens in 2024. Currently, TSMC is already making chips for Apple.

"as many of you know, we work with TSMC to make chips to power our products around the world," Mr Cook said. "as TSMC builds new and deeper roots in the US, we look forward to expanding this work in the coming years."

Cook said the self-developed chips used in most of Apple's devices will be produced at the Phoenix plant. "thanks to the hard work of so many people, these chips are proudly labeled 'made in America'." Cook said. At first, TSMC's Phoenix plant will produce only a small number of chips for Apple, possibly using less technology than the company's flagship devices in 2024.

Meanwhile, TSMC estimated on Tuesday that it would generate $10 billion in annual revenue when it plans to open two chipmaker plants in Arizona.

"when the two fabs are completed, we will produce more than 600,000 wafers a year, with annual revenue of US $10 billion and product sales of more than US $40 billion for customers," said Liu Deyin, CEO of TSMC.

TSMC said on Tuesday that it had more than tripled its planned investment in these plants to $40 billion. The first fab will be operational in 2024, while a second nearby plant will produce advanced chips in 2026.
