If developers want to price apps above $1000, they need to apply to Apple to avoid apps with a significant premium. CTOnews.com learned that Apple currently offers more than 900 prices for developers, but 100 of them need to be applied by developers and will not take effect until they are reviewed by Apple.

CTOnews.com learned that Apple's price adjustment is mainly based on the following rules:

Set a price for every 10 cents between 29 cents and $10 (about 70 yuan)

Set a price every 50 cents between $10 (about 70 yuan) and $50 (about 349 yuan)

Set a price every $1 between $50 and $1394

Set a price for each $5 between $1394 and $3485

Set a price every $10 between $3485 (about RMB 3485) and $1000 (about RMB 6970)

Set a price every $1000 (about 6970 yuan) to $10000 (about 69700 yuan)

Developers support four formats at the end of pricing, including "x.99", "x.00", "x.90" and "x.95", but the maximum prices supported by the four are different, as shown in the figure below.

Apple today announced the most comprehensive upgrade of the pricing mechanism for App Store, providing developers with 700new price points and new pricing tools, making it easier for developers to set prices for App Store in different countries and regions, manage foreign currency exchange rate changes, and so on.

Since its inception, App Store has helped developers easily price and sell their products and services around the world with leading trading and payment mechanisms. From providing users with smooth settlement and clear receipts to powerful marketing tools, tax and fraud prevention services, and refund management, App Store's transaction and payment mechanism provides developers with expanding features and tools to help them grow their business.

The pricing mechanism is the basis of these functions, allowing developers to choose from a variety of business models, such as one-time purchases and multiple subscription types. App, which provides automatic renewal subscription service, can use the above upgrade pricing mechanism from today. All other App and App purchases will be able to use the new pricing mechanism starting in the spring of 2023, and all developers will have unprecedented flexibility and control to price products in 45 currencies in stores in 175 countries.

In the upgraded App Store pricing mechanism, all developers can choose from 900price points, a nearly nine-fold increase over the number of optional price points available for most previous App. This includes 600 new optional price points and another 100 high price points that can be obtained through application. To provide greater pricing flexibility to developers around the world, the price point will be as low as RMB 1 and up to RMB 74999 upon application. In App Store in 175countries, developers will be able to take advantage of new pricing methods, including pricing that begins with duplicate numbers (e.g., subscription 110000), and will be able to set prices ending in integers (such as X.00 or X.90) for products other than $0.99 or passport X.99, making it easier to manage App packages or annual subscription programs.

Starting today, developers who subscribe to App will be able to choose the regional stores they are most familiar with, based on which they will automatically generate pricing for the other 174 countries and 44 currencies, making it easier to manage currencies and taxes in local stores. Developers can also set prices for different stores on demand. Pricing for different stores will be extended to all other App in the spring of 2023.

For developers who distribute App around the world, App Store's Global balancing tool will provide them with a simple and convenient way to manage pricing in the international market. On the basis of these features, the upgrade announced today will allow developers to keep the local currency they acquire in any store of their choice, even if foreign currency exchange rates and taxes fluctuate. For example, a Japanese game developer whose main business income comes from Japanese customers can use the pricing of Japanese stores as a basis, and its pricing in other countries and regions will be updated with changes in foreign currency exchange rates and tax rates. All developers can also decide whether to provide in-App purchased content for stores in different countries and regions.

Apple regularly updates pricing in each region according to changes in taxes and foreign currency exchange rates. Apple updates pricing based on public exchange rate information provided by financial data institutions to ensure that pricing of content purchased within App is balanced across all stores. At present, developers can adjust their pricing at any time according to changes in taxes and foreign currency exchange rates. From 2023, developers of content purchased in paid App and App will be able to set local pricing, which will not be affected by automatic pricing adjustments.
