CTOnews.com, December 6 (Xinhua)-- humanoid robots, a product category that often appears in science fiction but whose practical application is just beginning, has been joined by a number of big companies, and Sony may be next, according to the latest report.

Sony said on Tuesday that it was technically ready to build humanoid robots, but first to determine the use of such robots.

Hiroaki Kitano, Sony's chief technology officer, told Reuters: "in terms of technology, several major companies around the world, including Sony, have accumulated enough technology that once they are clear about which uses are promising, they can be built quickly, and the key is the development of applications."

CTOnews.com learned that companies such as Tesla and Xiaomi have launched prototype products for humanoid robots, and Tesla's Tianzhu robot could start production as early as next year, with a target price of "probably less than $20,000 (currently about 139000 yuan)."

CyberOne, Xiaomi's first full-size humanoid bionic robot, made its debut in August this year, without announcing a time for mass production.
