CTOnews.com December 6-The average person's impression of Mars is probably dry, dead and dusty, especially in terms of geology.

But new data from NASA's Insight Mars lander seems to indicate that Mars is not static below the surface, and that hot magma is likely boiling, perhaps waiting for an explosion.

CTOnews.com learned that Insight landed in an area of Mars called the Blissful Plains, where it detected sustained seismic activity.

A new study by scientists published Monday in the journal Nature Astronomy found evidence that the region lies above plumes of hot material rising upward from Mars 'mantle. The area is also home to a fracture system called Cerberus Fossae, and the last volcanic eruption on Mars is thought to have occurred 53,000 years ago.

The Insight data suggest that magma currently beneath the region explains Martian earthquakes detected by the lander, which may be driving changes in the Martian crust of Cerberus Fossae that could lead to volcanic eruptions one day in the future.

Adrian Broquet and Jeffrey Andrews Hanna of the University of Arizona wrote in the research paper:"The continuous plume activity indicates that Mars today is not only seismic and volcanic, but also has active geodynamics inside. "

The researchers believe the discovery could also have implications for the potential habitability of the environment below the Martian surface, which may be warmer than previously thought.

Unfortunately, however, Insight appears to be nearing the end of its life, and it is feared that future human missions to investigate volcanic activity on Mars will be left to future robots, perhaps even astronauts.
