CTOnews.com, December 5 (Xinhua)-- British technology company Nothing plans to launch a new smartphone in the United States to compete directly with Apple's iPhone, according to a new report.

Carl Pei, chief executive of Nothing, said in an interview with CNBC that the start-up was in "early conversations" with telecom operators about launching new phones in the United States, but he did not name any operators.

Nothing launched the Nothing Phone (1) smartphone in more than 40 markets around the world in July, including countries in the UK, Japan, India and continental Europe. At the time, the company said it had no plans to widely release Nothing Phone (1) in the United States.

"the reason we didn't release it in the United States is that we need a lot of additional technical support to support all operators and the unique customizations they need to build on Android," Carl Pei explained in an interview. "We don't think we were ready yet. We are now in discussions with some operators in the United States that a future product may be launched there."

Carl Pei also admits that it is not easy for Nothing to compete with Apple in US territory. "Android faces challenges, and Apple's iOS is becoming more and more dominant. They have a strong monopoly on iMessage and AirDrop, especially in Generation Z, so this is a growing concern for us."

CTOnews.com learned that Nothing has so far sold more than 1 million products worldwide, with 600,000 sets of Nothing Ear (1) headphones and 500000 shipments of Nothing Phone (1).

Nothing expects its revenue to jump more than tenfold in 2022-from $20 million (140 million yuan) in 2021 to $250 million (1.752 billion yuan) this year. However, the company is still losing money, which Carl Pei says is partly due to foreign currency exchange changes.

"We pay a lot of COGS in dollars, but we make money in pounds, euros, Indian rupees-so everything depreciates against the dollar. Our goal is to be profitable by 2024."
