CTOnews.com, December 5-shipments of desktops, laptops and workstations in the United States fell 12% year-on-year to 17.8 million units in the third quarter of 2022, according to the latest data from analyst firm Canalys.

Due to cautious business spending by companies, coupled with a decline in consumer and education spending, laptop shipments fell 14 per cent, making it the biggest decline of all PC categories. Shipments of PCs in this category rose slightly by 1 per cent in the third quarter as desktops recovered from the recession during the COVID-19 epidemic. Despite a number of promotions, tablet shipments fell slightly by 1% due to reduced demand due to inflation. In addition, while business demand has been strong in recent quarters, shipments in the commercial segment fell by 2 per cent in the third quarter.

Dell topped the US desktop and laptop market with a 26 per cent market share in the third quarter, but its shipments fell 17 per cent year-on-year. Hewlett-Packard ranked second in shipments of 4.1 million units, but fell the most among the top five, down 23%. Apple performed well in the third quarter, with shipments up 26%, thanks to a tight backlog of orders in the second quarter and the launch of the new M2 computer. Lenovo struggled in the commercial market and its shipments were not ideal, falling to fourth place. Acer ranked fifth with strong growth of 14 per cent.

Apple has long maintained its leading position in the u.s. tablet market with a 41% market share. In recent quarters, high-end tablets have suffered setbacks as consumers are more price-sensitive, while tablets in the people-friendly range have performed better. Amazon ranked second with a market share of 27%, and its shipments increased by 20% on the back of a successful Prime membership day in July. Samsung ranked third with 1.6 million units shipped, down 13% from a year earlier. TCL stepped up its marketing and branding efforts in the United States, with continued strong growth of 133%, while Microsoft ranked in the top five with a 12% decline.
