Now, Dr. Ian Cutress has introduced some of the technical specifications for future GDDR7 memory. It is said that the bandwidth and density of the new generation of GDDR7 video memory will be twice that of the current GDDR6.

First of all, the GDDR7 video memory will use PAM3 signaling at a rate up to 36Gbps. CTOnews.com learned that traditional GDDR6 uses NRZ (non-return to zero) or PAM2 signaling with a data rate of 14024 Gbps. It is worth mentioning that Intel previously announced 80G lightning interface and USB interface will also use PAM3 signaling.

Although there are some 18 Gbps, 20 Gbps and 22 Gbps GDDR6 chips, they have not been put into production in the development phase of the RTX 30 series "Ampere" GPU, so NVIDIA and Micron jointly developed the GDDR6X standard based on PAM4 signaling, with speeds ranging from 18 Gbps to 23 Gbps.

According to reports, traditional NRZ signaling can provide the transmission rate of 1bit per cycle, while PAM4 can achieve the transmission rate of 2bit per cycle, while PAM3 uses a more advanced waveform, including more "eyes" (gaps produced by wave crossover), thus achieving 3bit per cycle.

Samsung says PAM3 is 25 per cent more efficient than NRZ signaling and GDDR7 will be 25 per cent more efficient.

Samsung said that the new generation of GDDR7 video memory can bring a data rate of 36 Gbps, which is twice as high as GDDR6, and of course GDDR6 has the same improvement for GDDR5.

A GPU with 256bit memory bus will get 1152 GB / s of memory bandwidth when using 36 Gbps GDDR7 memory, while if it is a high-end GPU with 384bit interface, it can reach 1728 GB / s, and the 128bit interface at the main stream level will only get 576 GB / s.
