If Apple removes its Twitter App from App Store, both Elon Elon Musk and Apple will lose a lot. Mark Gurman, a well-known columnist, says there is a solution to the dispute between the two sides while giving Musk what he wants.
First of all, if there is an all-out "war" with Apple, Twitter will be in a difficult position to survive. App Store can reach more than 1.5 billion devices around the world, making it the best way for users to get Twitter apps. Mr Musk has said he can build his own phone and operating system to bypass Apple and Google. However, this is too complicated to do so.
Apple will also face a disaster. If Apple removes its Twitter shelves, then Apple executives may face questions from the U.S. Congress, Apple's brand will be seriously damaged, and Apple will be considered politically biased. In addition, Twitter will no longer be included in Apple's ecology, and Twitter App is the reason why many users insist on using Apple devices.
Musk said his conflict with Apple was "fighting for the future of civilization" and criticized Apple's app censorship system. This is no accident. His bigger complaint with Apple is the fees charged by App Store. Mr Musk is signalling to the legislature and public opinion that if Apple removes Twitter or kills the app in any way, it is restricting freedom of speech.
The reality is that Apple will give Twitter unprecedented room for manoeuvre. As long as Twitter does not violate App Store's "golden rule", that is, it must provide Apple with a 30 per cent share of revenue, Apple will not remove its Twitter app.
This income sharing is a serious problem for Musk. He recently spent $44 billion on Twitter, which he admits is too much. Musk has made it clear that he hopes to fix Twitter within three years and then sell it or go public. He also promised to boost profits by moving Twitter to a business model where users pay for orders, adding new features and upgrading existing ones.
It is almost impossible to shift Twitter to a fully paid subscription model and recoup its investment within three years, especially given that Apple will share 30 per cent of Twitter's revenue. To make matters worse, Apple has cut advertising spending on Twitter. (but Mr Musk said over the weekend that Apple's advertising spending had recovered. )
So it's not surprising that Mr Musk, a billionaire, has taken aim at Apple over the past week. He knows that Apple has become an obstacle to achieving his financial goals, and he will use freedom of speech as a tool to protect himself.
It was aware of the situation that Tim Cook, Apple's chief executive, stepped in to try to calm tensions between the two sides. The two met at Apple headquarters last week. Musk said he was told that Apple had never considered taking the Twitter app off the shelf, a claim that Musk first came up with.
The stalemate between the two sides may not be over. If Musk tries to evade App Store fees, Cook will have to consider whether to take Twitter off the shelf.
On the face of it, it was a difficult decision, but in fact Apple had no choice. If Twitter embeds its own payment system into the app and bypasses Apple's charging mechanism, Cook will have to follow his own rules and get off Twitter (but before that, Musk may be given a few days to decide whether to change his decision).
Many people may think that it would be better for society if Twitter were removed from App Store, given that Musk prefers not to censor content or block user accounts. But it is clear that Cook does not want things to come to this either.
This is not because the removal of Twitter will bring losses to Apple, but because such an incident may cause a crisis to the entire Apple ecology. If Mr Musk openly flouts Apple's rules, it could trigger a domino effect and attract other companies to follow suit. Then the entire App Store business model will collapse.
So Cook needs to calm Musk down. The question now is how long the peace agreement between the two sides is likely to last. Whatever they discussed during their meeting at apple's campus headquarters in Cupertino, Calif., Mr Musk is unlikely to quietly accept 30 per cent of apple's revenue-sharing rules. (Musk has criticized Apple's charging model for years. )
The good news is that there is also a fully compliant plan that will allow the two companies to avoid a crisis, while Musk can get the full $8 that users pay to subscribe to Twitter Blue services.
Twitter can set up a website that accepts online payments from Blue and other paid services, and then requires users to sign up for Twitter through the web. Later, when a user logs in to Twitter via iPhone or iPad, the paid service is unlocked and the user does not need to process the payment through Apple.
This will save Musk 30% of the fee paid to apple and will only have to bear some credit card fees. This is in accordance with the App Store rules. According to the "cross-platform services" rule in the App Store guide, users can pay for orders from other platforms, including the web side, as long as the same service is also available through the iOS side.
Mr Musk can charge $8 on the web side and then symbolically raise the price on the iOS side by 30 per cent. Either way, he will get $8, but such pricing will encourage users to pay through the web side. It is worth noting, however, that Apple's rules also require that web-end payment solutions should not be promoted anywhere within the iOS app, so such adjustments may need to be matched by off-side marketing activities.
Using App Store rules, Mr Musk can avoid a 30 per cent share of Apple's revenue while keeping his app in App Store, avoiding a dilemma for both himself and Apple. It is likely that Cook and Apple will also think that this will be a victory.
