CTOnews.com, December 3 (Xinhua) Irish employees have had an argument with their bosses over the Microsoft Edge browser. Citing technology media independent, many companies in Ireland require employees to use Microsoft's Edge browser and Bing search engine first on the grounds of security, tracking and data flow, but the vast majority of users have rejected the company's request.

According to Statcounter statistics, Microsoft Edge browser's share of the global desktop market exceeded 11% in November 2022, making it the second largest desktop browser in the world. But Statcounter data show that the share of Edge browsers in Ireland is only 4 per cent. Chrome and Safari account for 54 per cent and 32 per cent, respectively.

CTOnews.com has learned that Irish regulators have forced Microsoft to distinguish browsers from Windows. But Microsoft still has a lot of influence in Irish enterprises, and many companies require employees to use Edge as their preferred browser by adding proprietary software or services.

And Irish companies require Microsoft Bing to be set as the default search engine. But Bing's market share in Ireland is also low, at 3.4 per cent. Google has almost monopolized the search market in Ireland, reaching 92%, which has remained virtually unchanged in the past 12 months.

Apple is the most widely used operating system in Ireland, with 39 per cent of devices, including phones, tablets and computers, according to Statcounter. Google Android was not far behind with 33 percent, while Microsoft Windows ranked third with 26 percent.
