Johnson wrote in the article that the company sent people to follow him because the manager was worried that he might "retire or die." Johnson said that SpaceX's human resources department told him at a meeting earlier this year that he would be assigned another position at SpaceX, but there has been no word since. Johnson finally resigned in June.

"SpaceX has a hiring model for promoting young people, so having an employee who is decades older than most is obviously not in line with its corporate culture," Johnson said in a telephone interview.
