Medibank, Australia's largest insurance company, has been attacked by hackers to provide health insurance for more than 3.9 million people in the country, CTOnews.com reported on December 2. After Medibank refused to pay a ransom of 1500 million Australian dollars (72.0818 million yuan), cyber criminals released a large number of documents ending in .csv on the secret Internet and threatened to disclose more data if the ransom was not paid.

CTOnews.com learned that Medibank said that after the investigation, there was no evidence that the hackers accessed user data and there was no data loss, and that the company had taken all necessary measures to make up for the possible impact of the incident. Emily Ritchie, senior director of external affairs at Medibank, added:

Although our investigation is continuing, there is no indication that financial or bank-related data have been stolen. Moreover, the stolen personal data itself is not sufficient to achieve identification and financial fraud. So far, the raw data we have analyzed today is incomplete and difficult to read normally.

The Australian federal police also seem to have identified the hackers. They claim that this is a group linked to the REvil blackmail software gang. David Koczkar, the CEO of Medibank, has publicly apologized to his customers and promised to provide them with proper security.
