CTOnews.com, December 1, according to the three Gorges Group, on the morning of November 29, the launch ceremony of the world's first GWh-class sodium ion battery production line was held in Fuyang City, Anhui Province. The production line is the phased result of the deep cooperation between the three Gorges Energy, the three Gorges Capital and the people's Government of Fuyang City, Anhui Province.

According to reports, the product line marks that the production line officially has the ability to produce gigawatt-grade sodium ion batteries on a large scale, and is of milestone significance in opening up a new track for the energy storage industry and the development of sodium ion battery industrialization.

CTOnews.com learned that in December 2021, three Gorges Energy, three Gorges Capital and the people's Government of Fuyang City, Anhui Province, and China Kehai Sodium reached a cooperation intention and signed an agreement on the establishment of the world's first gigawatt-hour sodium ion battery production line in Fuyang. A year later, the product was officially offline.

In April this year, Huawei's Shenzhen Hubble Technology Investment Partnership (Limited Partnership) (Shenzhen Hubble) also began to lay out sodium ion batteries and invested in Zhongke Hainna, the company that makes the production line.

At present, the industry is actively laying out the research and development of sodium ion batteries. Ningde Times officially released the first generation of sodium ion batteries in July this year, with an energy density of 160Wh/kg, and is expected to form a basic industrial chain in 2023. Huang Qisen, vice president of Ningde Times Research Institute, said that in terms of passenger car applications, sodium ion batteries can generally meet the needs of models with a range of less than 400 kilometers, and are expected to expand to 500 kilometers.

This year, the National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration also issued the "implementation Plan for the Development of New Energy Storage in the 14th five-year Plan", which proposes to promote diversified technology development. Carry out research on key core technologies, equipment and integrated optimization design of sodium-ion battery, new lithium-ion battery, lead-carbon battery, liquid flow battery, compressed air, hydrogen (ammonia) energy storage, hot (cold) energy storage and so on.

At the recent sodium ion battery industry chain and standard development forum, Chen Liquan, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said that the current sodium ion battery is still in the promotion stage, with the improvement of the industrial chain, the improvement of technology maturity and scale effect. The cost of sodium ion battery is expected to be more than 20% lower than that of lithium iron phosphate battery, creating favorable conditions for large-scale promotion of sodium ion battery.

Academician Chen Liquan mentioned that lithium battery is the best secondary battery at present, but due to the limited lithium resources, it can not meet the needs of electric vehicles and energy storage at the same time, so sodium ion batteries will become the next generation of low-speed electric vehicles and energy storage batteries.
