CTOnews.com, December 1 (Xinhua)-- Elon Musk's startup Neuralink, which hopes to connect our brains directly to computers, today demonstrated how a monkey named Sake can type by using only his brain to control a virtual keyboard.

The monkey doesn't know how to spell, but it can track Neuralink's keys highlighted in yellow on the screen. The N1 chip embedded in the monkey skull can read brain activity to move the cursor on the screen.

This is a step further than the monkey playing ping-pong computer game shown by Neuralink in 2021, but so far, Neuralink's chip can only record the activity of the brain. The company's ultimate goal is to also send signals to the brain to help blind people see and tetraplegic people to walk.

"We believe that you can control your phone better with your brain than with your hands," Musk said at Neuralink's Show and tell event.

But Twitter, which he bought for $44 billion, is still in disarray, and its Boring company, which aims to change the transportation industry through tunnels, has not yet fulfilled its promise. Neuralink doesn't seem to be easier than social networks, and connecting computer hardware to our brains poses huge technical, regulatory and moral challenges. Musk said the Neuralink was expected to begin human trials within six months. Most of the documents have been submitted to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to seek approval for clinical trials of wireless brain chips.
