According to the latest "Ericsson Mobility Report" report released by Ericsson on Wednesday, more than 1 billion people worldwide will join the 5G network by the end of 2022, CTOnews.com reported on December 1, citing foreign science and technology media CNET.

CTOnews.com learned that the report indicates that 5G added 110 million users worldwide in the third quarter of this year (July-September), bringing the total to 870 million. Ericsson predicts that the number of global 5G users will exceed 1 billion by the end of 2022, which means that 5G networks will break through the 9-digit mark faster than 4G networks, expanding at the fastest rate ever.

Fredrik Jejdling, head of Ericsson networks, said: "Global communications service providers continue to deploy 5G and fixed wireless access (Fixed Wireless Access) is accelerating. Global mobile network data traffic actually doubles every two years."

The report also pointed out that 4G networks were also growing in the third quarter of this year, with 41 million new users, and they are expected to peak at 5.2 billion by the end of this year, while the total number of mobile users is expected to exceed 8.4 billion. According to the report, 5G is expected to reach 5 billion global users by 2028, accounting for 55 per cent of all network users. The total number of mobile users is expected to exceed 9.2 billion in 2028.
