Arm, a chip design company owned by SoftBank Group, has included former Qualcomm CEO Paul Jacobs and former Intel executive Rose Schooler on its board of directors to prepare for an upcoming initial public offering (IPO).
Arm said in a statement released Wednesday that the two executives will help Arm prepare for the IPO by providing experience in developing corporate strategy at public companies. Arm's other directors include SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son and iPhone pioneer Tony Fadell.
Schooler left as head of sales for intel's server chip division, which still dominates this lucrative computing space. Jacobs, meanwhile, led Qualcomm for nearly a decade. During this period, the company became the largest smartphone processor vendor.
At present, the $580 billion chip industry is in a fragile moment, during which SoftBank hopes to complete the Arm listing. A slowdown in tech spending has caused the company's share price to slide this year. Arm is also engaged in a legal battle with Jacobs 'old employer Qualcomm over technology licensing.
Arm's technology and chip design are almost ubiquitous in modern electronics, especially in mobile phones. Its customer list includes Apple, Amazon and many other large tech companies around the world. Arm CEO Rene Haas has been tasked with extending that influence to emerging areas needed for computers and self-driving cars.
Jacobs declined to comment on Arm's legal dispute with Qualcomm in an interview, but said: "Being a public company will bring Arm more scrutiny and more attention, but it will also push it to sharpen its sword. The key for me is where Arm is located, it has a broad customer base. "
Schooler worked at Intel for more than 30 years and until recently served as Arm's rival. Most of her job is to convince customers not to use Arm's chip technology. But now she looks forward to helping Arm move into new markets, just as she did earlier in her Intel career.
"I've spent most of my life in charge of offensive strategy at semiconductor companies, and it's great to be back in that role," Schooler said in an interview. My role is not to be an operational leader, but to be a strategic advisor to a company with great growth opportunities. "
