Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
December 1 (Xinhua) Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, the parent company of Facebook, backed Elon Musk, the new owner of Twitter, on Wednesday, local time, blaming Apple's lack of neutrality on app store policy and a conflict of interest.
"it's problematic to have one company (Apple) control the app experience on the device," Zuckerberg said in an interview at the New York Times DealBook conference on Wednesday. "I don't think this is a good place for sustainability. Most of the profits from the mobile ecosystem go to Apple."
Zuckerberg compared Apple to Google. The latter allows users to download apps freely to their Android smartphones without relying on the Google App Store. "Google always does this so you can use other app stores and work directly with phone makers," he said. "that's the commitment we made when we built VR and AR headsets."
The app store policy and the practice of charging commissions for in-app purchases implemented by Apple and Google's parent company Alphabet have long been contentious issues for technology companies seeking to reach a wide audience. Musk joined in after buying Twitter, posting a series of tweets this week denouncing Apple's high fees and restrictions on app sales. Musk said Apple had also threatened to remove Twitter from its app store.
Zuckerberg agrees with some of Musk's views. He said there was a "conflict of interest" in Apple's content censorship rules for apps because they tend to target competitors of Apple's own apps. This makes Apple "more than just a manager who cares about the interests of users". Meta's revenue has been hit hard by Apple's tighter privacy policy and restrictions on tracking users and targeting users through advertising, and the company's market capitalization has shrunk by 2/3 this year.
Tim Cook, Apple's chief executive, has long been critical of Facebook's business that relies on user data, even linking the company's algorithmic model to violent actions by extremist groups because of problems with the way the app recommends content.
Zuckerberg said on Wednesday that Apple is not a neutral role and has many of its own "strategic interests" to consider.
When asked how Musk managed Twitter, Zuckerberg's comments were somewhat vague. "I guess some ways will work and others won't," he said. I think it will be very interesting what happens next. " As to whether Meta will allow former US President Donald Trump to return to Facebook, as Twitter did recently, Mr Zuckerberg said the company's oversight committee would make the final decision.
In the interview, Zuckerberg was also asked about his attitude towards meta-universe. He argues that the idea that Meta is completely focused on the meta-universe is "basically wrong". WhatsApp, an instant messaging app, will be his next major profit target, he said, because the platform is "largely undeveloped".
