CTOnews.com, November 30, Intel launched a large-scale Linux patch solicitation campaign in September this year to classify the tasks of hybrid CPU designed with large and small cores and improve the Linux performance of these CPU by assigning tasks more reasonably. The "opinion solicitation" campaign ended successfully, with Intel releasing 22 patches on Monday.

The purpose of this work is to improve the performance and efficiency of Intel's 12th generation "Alder Lake" and 13th generation "Raptor Lake" processors. Given that there was no strong objection to the previous proposal for load balancing around the introduction of IPC classes, the project removed the RFC tag, and the next phase aims to integrate into Linux's Mainline kernel.

On hybrid processors, the microarchitecture properties of different types of CPU cause them to have different instruction per cycle (IPC) capabilities. On some CPU, the IPC priority of advanced instructions can be higher. The load balancer can find out whether or not to use advanced instructions and give priority to CPU with a higher IPC for the task running these instructions.

CTOnews.com learned that hardware is free to divide its instruction set into any number of categories. But it must provide a mechanism to identify the categories of currently running tasks and tell the kernel how well each type of task performs on each type of CPU.

The patch set released by Intel on Monday introduces the concept of task categories, defines the interfaces required for hardware implementation, modifies load balancers, and uses asymmetric packaging to make better use of this additional information to enhance performance.

Since the release of the original patch, some code improvements have been made on the basis of code review and testing. The CONFIG_SCHED_TASK_CLASSES option is renamed to CONFIG_IPC_CLASSES. This patch series also abandons the CONFIG_INTEL_THREAD_DIRECTOR knob. But the rest of the changes are basically low-level changes.
