Evan Spiegel, CEO of Snap, a US social media company, informed employees in a memo on Monday that they expected to go back to the office four days a week starting in February.

"I believe that spending more time in face-to-face communication will help us reach our full potential," Spiegel wrote. " This means that full-time employees spend an average of more than four days a week in the office, while some work-related tasks, such as meeting with clients, can also be counted as office hours, he says.

Spiegel went on to write in the memo: "while each of us may have sacrificed in terms of personal convenience, I believe we will gain more in terms of collective success."

For most of the second half of the year, Snap has been downsizing and shelving some projects to cut costs. In August, the company laid off 20 per cent of its staff and cut projects that did not help revenue growth and boost AR technology. As customers cut advertising budgets, the company failed to increase revenue as quickly as expected.

With the relaxation of epidemic restrictions, Snap is the latest company to formally require employees to return to the office. Previously, Apple required employees to work three days a week starting in September.

Twitter's new boss, Elon Musk, insists that employees work in the office, although the company has previously told employees that they can "telecommute" anywhere. Many of Wall Street's biggest banks have scrapped their home-office policies.

For Snap, the new reinstatement policy will apply to all employees in 30 offices around the world. At the same time, the company is also developing procedures for special employees who request telecommuting.

"We've been working in this way for so long that I'm afraid we've forgotten the benefits of face-to-face communication," Spiegel said. "I believe that while retaining flexibility for our team members, the new policy will also help us accelerate growth and achieve our strategic focus of developing our communities, re-building our revenue growth, and taking the lead in AR."
