CTOnews.com, Nov. 29, KDE Gear will improve file access to iPhone, iPad and other Apple devices in its version update next year. Several existing KDE implementations already have access to files on iOS devices, but the KDE team announced that it would incorporate the latest KIO code to compile the feature.

The rewritten KIO code supports the Apple File Conduit (AFC) service on iOS devices and incorporates it into the kio-extras module, which will be integrated in the KDE Gear version in the future.

CTOnews.com learned that the new AFC code in kio-extras is based on the latest KIO class and supports the latest file access methods when iPhone / iPad devices connect to the KDE desktop environment through USB. In addition to accessing files in a regular file system, this feature can also access shared files through House Arrest API.

KDE Gear 22.12 entered a feature freeze on November 10, and the official version is expected to be released on December 8. KDE Gear 23.04, which supports Apple File Conduit KIO, is expected to be released in April 2023.

CTOnews.com learned that KDE Gear is a set of applications and support libraries developed by the KDE community and is mainly used on Linux-based operating systems, but most of them are multi-platform and released under a public release plan. The package consists of more than 100 applications. Prominent examples of applications in the bundling software include the file manager Dolphin, the document viewer Okular, the text editor Kate, the archiving tool Ark, and the terminal emulator Konsole.
