CTOnews.com Most Windows laptops and desktop devices with built-in webcams come with dedicated LED indicators to let you know intuitively if the camera is enabled. Not all devices offer this dedicated LED indicator, however, and Microsoft has built such a notification into Win11 to improve privacy, telling users whether the camera is on or off.

CTOnews.com learned that, as seen in the GIF above, users receive a notification in the notification area of the taskbar when the camera is enabled/disabled. And if you want to know exactly which apps are using webcams, you need to go to Settings> Privacy & Security> Webcams> Recent Activity to see the report.

So how do you implement this camera notification in Win11? The procedure is as follows:

1. Press Win + R and type regedit to launch the Windows Registry Editor. You can also use Windows Search or any other method to access it.

2. Once in Registry Editor, paste ComputerHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\OEM\Device\Capture into the address bar. This command will allow you to find the necessary registry keys.

3. Find the NoPhysicalCameraLED value. If there is no such value, click Edit> New> DWORD and rename the new value NoPhysicalCameraLED. This is the value responsible for camera privacy notifications in Windows Registry Editor.

4. Turn on the value and change its value data from 0 (default) to 1.

5. Restart your computer.

Changing the NoPhysicalCameraLED value from 0 to 1 causes your computer to think it doesn't have a physical indicator of a camera-on scene, forcing the operating system to display "camera-on" and "camera-off" notifications when something enters the built-in or external camera. Note that changing the value does not affect the physical LED indicator.
