On November 29, about 2/3 of Twitter's employees have been laid off since Elon Musk took over. Even for those who remain in the company, life seems to be difficult. According to foreign media reports, some European employees have not yet received their November wages.

Twitter employees in the UK received an email on the afternoon of November 25, London time, informing them that the pay date was November 28. In addition to the email sent to all Twitter employees in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, employees also received monthly pay slips. However, Twitter employees in the UK and Germany were not paid on time.

"We have noticed that some of you may not have received your salary in November 2022," Twitter wrote in an email to current and outgoing employees. We have made payments through our Twitter bank accounts, and as usual, the process has not changed. " The email added that this "may be due to inter-bank settlement delays, we are actively investigating the matter and will keep in touch with you".

But four independent sources in Britain and Germany said they were not paid on the morning of payday. Sources include current and former employees of Twitter, who can still receive months' salary as severance pay under the terms of leaving the company.

Usually, Twitter takes the 28th of each month as the payday. If it was Monday, Twitter would normally allocate money last Friday, and the salary would be paid to Twitter employees' accounts by midnight on Saturday. Previously, Twitter had been criticized by former employees for failing to pay severance payments on time, many of whom were even in debt.

Although employees in the UK and Germany have not yet been paid, employees in the Netherlands and Ireland have not been affected, suggesting that the problem is in terms of people and operations, not Twitter's deliberate refusal to pay employees. "the company is just not doing well enough," said one affected former UK employee on Twitter. "

A former Twitter employee shared screenshots of their bank accounts, showing that their wages were not paid, pushing them into an overdraft. "at first, they told you that you were fired, but we will try our best to keep your job," the former employee said. "then you are told that you can continue to receive your salary. now on payday, our accounts are still empty and unable to repay our debts."

The former employee continued: "I am ashamed that I believed the executives, who are now paid and enjoying it happily, while the rest of us have to continue to suffer. This is a very harsh way to not only force people to resign voluntarily, but also find ways not to give severance pay."

As of noon UK time, some employees reported that their wages were paid differently from the way Twitter usually pays them. One former employee said it was estimated that about 80 per cent of employees had not been paid around 1pm UK time, based on conversations between former and current employees in the Slack group.

A former employee shared a screenshot showing that the account had already received a sum of money that morning, but was later cancelled. Another former Twitter employee said that due to lack of funds in the account, "at least 20 people" had to call their mortgage provider because their wages did not arrive in time.

As of 6pm UK time, some Twitter employees in the UK have not yet been paid, according to people familiar with Twitter's work flow. Some people received an email indicating that the receiving bank was under anti-fraud investigation. Others reported that payroll payments come from different banks, which Twitter does not usually use to pay salaries, contradicting Twitter's earlier claim to employees that "as usual, the process has not changed".

Twitter did not respond to a request for comment, and it is not clear whether the company has any PR staff left behind after major layoffs.
