Nikkei says it can shoot facial details well even in strong backlighting.

Sony Semiconductor solutions have developed new image sensors that will be produced at its Nagasaki plant to supply Apple and other smartphone makers, according to sources.

According to reports, Sony's advanced sensor almost doubles the saturation signal level of each pixel compared with the current sensor, so it can capture more light and avoid over-exposure or underexposure in extreme cases.

One of the benefits of this is that when the background light is bright, such as on a sunny day, you can better take pictures of portraits. Sony is said to have achieved this through a new semiconductor architecture that aims to place photodiodes and transistors on different substrates, creating a higher-density layer.

It is worth mentioning that sources do not know whether all "iPhone 15" series models will use this new sensor technology, or whether it will be limited to the high-end "iPhone 15 Pro" series models in accordance with the current differentiation strategy.

In addition, there are rumors that the iPhone 15 Pro will have several exclusive features that the basic iPhone 15 model does not have, including an A17 chip, a high-speed USB-C interface, more RAM, and an upgraded telephoto / zoom lens.

According to sources, Apple is developing a periscope telephoto lens that will greatly improve the optical zoom of the iPhone 15 Pro, up to 10x, on a par with some of the flagship Android smartphones on the market.

It is worth mentioning that the new Sony sensor described by Nikkei may be a wide-angle camera, after all, Apple usually sets its wide-angle lens as the main camera of the iPhone.

CTOnews.com learned that Apple upgraded the rear camera (12MP 1.9um) on this year's iPhone 14 base model, and introduced a better front camera on the iPhone 14 Pro / Max, as well as an upgrade in rear camera resolution (48MP equivalent to 1.22um 12MP equivalent to 2.44um), but did not have the outsole CMOS that fans expected.
