According to reports, the steering wheel off-hand detection function (Hands On / Off Detection, hereinafter referred to as HOD), as a necessary safety configuration for high-level autopilot, has been paid more and more attention by the mainframe factory.

The HOD function can detect and display whether the driver is operating the steering wheel, and then identify the state of the driver's control of the vehicle (autopilot or manual driving), and warn the driver or activate the available auxiliary system according to the detection situation.

The technical basis of HOD is the principle of capacitance induction, that is, the driver forms a capacitive loop with the inductive layer on the steering wheel handle ring. When the driver holds or leaves the steering wheel, the capacitance will change accordingly. If the hand is detected on the steering wheel, the capacitance sensor will send out HANDS ON signal; on the contrary, if it is detected that the hand is not on the steering wheel, it will send HANDS OFF signal. The above signals are processed and used by the upper autopilot system. The capacitive sensor pad is divided into a sensor layer, a heating layer and a shielding layer. The sensor layer for HOD function is integrated between the steering wheel skeleton and the leather coating. At present, the red flag steering wheel HOD technology has carried the red flag E-HS9 model launch, and its layout structure on the steering wheel is shown in the following figure.

CTOnews.com learned that the Red Flag HOD steering wheel adopts a three-zone layout, that is, the sensors are distributed in the left half of the front, the right half of the front and the whole back of the steering wheel. Each regional sensor can independently identify the three operating states of contact, grip and departure between the driver's hand and the steering wheel. The R & D personnel have completed the calibration and verification of 26 driving gestures, which basically cover all the driving gesture habits of users. At the same time, through control algorithms and calibration, they can identify the impact of mistouching the steering wheel such as knees and water bottles on safe driving.
