According to a report from Southern Power Grid, across thousands of kilometers in eastern and western China, power transmission from west to east requires a DC project with long distance, large capacity and high voltage, and the hub equipment of converter transformer weighing more than 300 tons is used at both the transmission end and the receiving end of the project. The on-load tap-changer of the converter transformer is like the automatic "gearbox" of the automobile, through which the voltage regulation is high and low, the load regulation is more and less, and the current adjustment is small.
On-load tap-changer is a highly complex and sophisticated equipment. According to Deng Jun, a senior technical expert of the Southern Power Grid EHV Company, the on-load tap-changer of the converter transformer has more than 1000 parts, and the switching times are very frequent, up to more than 6000 times a year, and one switching includes nine processes. each action involves the precise coordination of more than 400 parts, and the timing of each process is millisecond, and the action process involves the coupling of electricity, heat and force.
Due to the extremely high reliability requirements and manufacturing difficulties, this technology has been in the hands of a small number of foreign manufacturers, and equipment maintenance is also limited. In the event of failure, imported products of the same type can only be replaced, and the ordering cycle takes 3 to 4 months, which brings challenges to the safety of power operation.
It is reported that after more than two years of efforts, the key research team jointly formed by the Southern Power Grid EHV Corporation in conjunction with the upstream and downstream enterprises of the industrial chain has overcome the core technical problems such as vacuum switches, and successfully developed a large-capacity on-load tap-changer with rated capacity 6000kVA, maximum voltage 6000V and maximum rated current 1300A, realizing the domestic manufacture of the whole chain of "raw materials-components-whole machine".
According to reports, the successful development of a large on-load tap-changer for domestic converter transformers will greatly reduce the investment in project construction. It is estimated only from the cost of equipment that a new UHVDC transmission project can save nearly 40 million yuan.
