On November 28, Elon Musk, chief executive of electric car maker Tesla, recently said in response to tweets about ESG (environmental, social and corporate governance) ratings that ESG is the devil.

Tesla was removed from the S & P 500 ESG index in May. The official reason given by S & P is that Tesla's ESG rating is too low to be included in the index.

This makes Musk's ESG rating also negative.

Carol Roth, a small business expert and consultant, tweeted on social media on Sunday, "remember... S & P removed Tesla from the ESG 500 but left Exxon?"ESG is a corporate social credit rating. It's a way to control capital, keep business people in line with this model, and eventually control you."

Musk responded with his characteristic brevity: "ESG is the devil."

The profile picture was taken from social media earlier this year, and Tesla was removed from the S & P 500 ESG index. Margaret Dorn, senior director of S & P and head of ESG, said in a blog post in May that Tesla was no longer eligible for inclusion in the S & P; ESG because Tesla's S & P ESG score, while "fairly stable" as usual, had fallen to the bottom 25 per cent of companies in the same industry around the world.

The factors contributing to Tesla's low ESG rating include companies' lack of "low-carbon energy and a code of business conduct", according to S & P.

"while Tesla may have played a role in driving fuel vehicles out of the market, they have lagged behind their peers in terms of broader ESG ratings," Mr Dorne said.
