CTOnews.com, Nov. 27, is it really scientific to say that drinking 8 glasses of water a day is good for your health? According to the official Wechat account of the Shenzhen Academy of Advanced Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a study published in Science on Nov. 25, Beijing time, subverts people's previous perceptions of drinking water. the above drinking water recommendations may exceed the actual water needs of most people.
In this study, the chief scientist of the Energy Metabolism and Reproduction Research Center of the Institute of Medicine, Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences and the professor of Pharmacy, Shenzhen University of Technology, John Roger Speakman (John Spickman) academician team, based on stable isotope method, studied a total of 5604 subjects from 26 countries, ranging in age from 8 days old to 96 years old. This paper deduces the first formula in the world to predict the daily water turnover of human body, and reveals the law of water demand in the whole life cycle of human for the first time.
This is another important achievement published in Science after Speakman and the international team first revealed the law of metabolism in the whole life cycle of human beings in Science in 2021. In this study, Academician Speakman is the main correspondent author, and Zhang Xueying, assistant researcher of Shenzhen Advanced Institute, is the co-first author.
Water is the source of life. Without water, human beings can only survive for three days. The daily water turnover (Water Turnover) of the human body, that is, the total exchange of water, including the water intake and loss of water, to a large extent reflects people's water demand.
Water turnover map Speakman team, together with the international team, measured the subjects' water turnover using the deuterium dilution technique based on the international "double standard water" database. It was found that the daily water turnover was 4.2 litres for men aged 20 to 35 and 3.3 litres for women aged 30 and 60, and then decreased with age, to about 2.5 liters in their 90s.
It is worth noting that the turnover of water is not equal to the demand for drinking water. for example, a man in his 20s has a daily turnover of 4.2 litres of water, but does not need to drink 4.2 litres of water. because metabolism and body surface water exchange can provide 15% of this, the remaining 85% of water demand comes from food and drinking water, food and drinking water half and half. As a result, the average daily drinking water for men in this age group is 1.5-1.8 liters.
By contrast, women drink less water because they have less non-fat ingredients than men. for example, a woman in her 20s may drink 1.3-1.4 liters of water a day.
One of the main findings of the study is that the recommended amount of eight glasses of water (or about 2 liters a day) is probably too high for most people. "said Zhang Xueying, co-lead author of the paper.
In addition, the study found that individual differences in water turnover rates are large. For example, only among adults, some people have a daily water turnover rate of only 5% of their body water, while others have a water turnover rate as high as 20%. The water demand of people in different ages, genders and countries is different. Therefore, this one-size-fits-all health advice is not suitable for accurate health guidance for individuals.
Since the 1980s, the "double-labeled water" method has been used to understand the energy metabolism of the body by collecting the urine of subjects for 14 days and analyzing the abundance changes of the markers in it. It is the "gold standard" used to detect the energy consumption of the human body under free living conditions.
The research team measured the subjects' water turnover objectively and accurately by using deuterium dilution technique, and studied the factors such as body weight, age, body composition, total energy consumption and physical activity level throughout human life, as well as the effects of climate, latitude, altitude, temperature and humidity on water turnover.
The analysis found that water turnover rates were higher among people living in hot and humid environments and at high altitudes, as well as among athletes, pregnant and lactating women and people with high levels of physical exercise. In addition, high water turnover rates were observed in developing countries and among people engaged in heavy manual labour, and daily physical activities also increased water turnover rates.
In addition, the study mentioned that water turnover rate has been proved to be related to many physiological health indicators, such as physical activity level, body fat rate, etc., and for the first time put forward the idea that water turnover rate can be used as a new biomarker to reflect human metabolic health, which provides a new idea for the study of obesity, diabetes and other metabolic chronic diseases.
Based on the impact of these factors on water turnover, researchers have developed the world's first equation for predicting human water turnover. "the equation can be applied to countries and regions around the world. You only need to know a person's basic physiological indicators and the average temperature and humidity of his living environment to predict a person's water demand." Introduced by Zhang Xueying.
With the change of world population structure and climate warming, this study provides an equation for predicting human water demand under the guidance of big data, and provides an important scientific basis for improving the management of drinking water and water-rich food in the future.
CTOnews.com learned that at present, Shenzhen Advanced Institute, where academician Speakman is located, has set up the first "double standard water" laboratory and accurate human nutrition laboratory in China, which will further reveal the laws of life and provide scientific guidance for human beings to formulate accurate nutrition strategies.
