Hiroshi Sasaki, director of the JAXA institution, apologized for the data fraud at a press conference on the 25th.

According to reports, the team conducted an experiment between 2016 and 2017 to evaluate the psychological stress of eight adults living in simulated space, and the results showed that the experimental data were falsified by the two. just to make it look like other researchers are involved in the evaluation.

JAXA later found that there was something wrong with the experimental data and launched an investigation in November 2017, and the project was suspended two years later. Two researchers explained that it was mainly because they were "too busy" to fully participate in the experiment.

It is worth mentioning that the team involved was led by Japanese astronaut Satoshi Furukawa. Although Gukawa should bear part of the responsibility and accept penalties for data fraud, JAXA said he would return to the International Space Station next year as planned.

CTOnews.com learned that Satoshi Furukawa, 58, worked and lived on the International Space Station for 165 days in 2011 and was the third Japanese astronaut to be resident on the International Space Station.

Furukawa is in charge of the implementation of the whole project, and what is directly related to the problem is the expert of psychological interview. Hiroshi Sasaki pointed out that Furukawa "has the responsibility of management and supervision." JAXA said that "it will be dealt with properly in accordance with the procedures in the future."

Sasaki apologized: "lax data management and loose management of research damage not only the reliability of research data, but also the scientific value of the whole research." On the reasons for the violation, he pointed out: "as an organization, there is a shallow understanding of medical research and lack of experience. Missed the opportunity to improve self-discipline."
