This tutorial explains the most important color matching methods in photography. Many beginners may think that color matching depends on feeling, mistakenly thinking that professional photographers feel good in this respect, but in fact, it is not. This aspect depends on the characteristics of color matching and the corresponding color matching tool attributes, together to complete color matching, this is a law to follow.

Establish a correct concept of color

Sometimes we think that color is independent, this is green, that is red, but in fact, there is no good or bad for a certain color.

Only when several colors are matched as a whole can we say whether such color collocation is coordinated or not. So, we're talking about color matching, not a single color.

Hue ring is the theoretical basis. Where does it come from?

The visible spectrum, excluding ultraviolet and infrared rays, leaves the visible region, connecting the two ends of the banded spectrum to form a ring, that is, the hue ring.

The adjacent color in the hue ring is the analogy color (adjacent color).

The opposite of the hue ring is the complementary color (contrast color)

The scheme of color matching is also based on this.

There are four main color matching schemes.

1. Monochromatic collocation

2. Colorimetric collocation

3. Complementary color matching

4. Separate complementary colors

First, monochromatic collocation with the same hue consists of dark, medium and bright lightness. Monochromatic collocation does not form a level of color, but it is divided by different levels of lightness, that is, the depth of color.

This method is not commonly used and has great limitations on the scene, which requires the scene to have a light and dark level, and the structural lines of the picture are attractive enough. The advantage is that the color of the picture is simple and comfortable, it is not easy to produce visual fatigue, weakens the impact of color on vision, and focuses more attention on the shape and structure of the object.

This is the Beijing Galaxy SOHO, characterized by curved lines and hollowed-out roofs, which is very attractive in structure, so I later became a monochromatic blues, weakening the messy light color, so that the whole picture is blue, but the depth of blue in different areas is different, highlighting layers of curves, echoing with the fountain in the foreground.

This is taken in the desert, and the color of the sand is already the same, so if you want the desert lines to be more prominent, you must shoot at the side light at sunrise or sunset to form such light and shade lines.

This is the rotating staircase of the Beixuan residence in Shanghai. Although it is an environmental portrait, it is not just an expression of characters. The natural light from the patio will make the staircase form an obvious level and highlight the spiral structure, so I let the characters wear brown clothes that are very close to the scene. Strengthen the light and dark effect, highlight the structure.

Therefore, when the structural lines of the scene are particularly prominent, you can choose a monochromatic scheme, but you must make a level of light and shade.

Second, colorimetric matching (adjacent colors) has a common color element

The yellows and oranges, yellows and greens, cyan and blues on the hue ring are all called analogical colors, and this color combination produces a harmonious sense of low contrast.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong is the unity of man and nature, the reflection of the pool is real, and the banyan tree gives the scene surrounded by the picture a beautiful feeling, so I use the adjacent colors of green and yellow to convey a soft visual feeling.

Icelandic rhinoceros stone, blue and gray match, because the scene is very quiet in the morning, so in order to highlight this quiet atmosphere, I chose a cold tone with low contrast.

Shoot plants, yellow and green, the main body is white dandelion, so I do not choose a strong contrast color in the environment, that will be noisy.

Therefore, when we want to express a harmonious, aesthetic, quiet low-contrast picture atmosphere, we can choose adjacent color matching.

Third, complementary colors are called complementary colors.

Blue and yellow, cyan and red, green and goods are common complementary colors, also known as contrast colors.

Contrast colors form a strong color contrast effect, conveying the meaning of vitality and energy. Complementary colors to achieve the best results, it is best that one of the area is relatively small, the other is relatively large. The color with less distribution area serves as the point of interest of the work.

There are four main functions of contrasting colors.

1. When the scene is dull, attract people with colors

2. Use inverse color to distinguish layers.

3. Highlight the main body by contrast color.

4. combined with high light ratio, make the visual impact stronger.

This is a very dull seaside scene, cloudy, the sea is gray, there is nothing attractive.

So I choose the blues time to shoot, the night and light naturally form a cold and warm contrast, through the color contrast to make up for the insipid scene, and there is light and dark contrast to highlight the main body.

Fitzroy, Argentina, the daytime shooting is very insipid, and the prospect is very messy.

In the later stage, I changed the color into gold and red in the foreground plants and snow-capped mountains, and dark blue in the sky and foreground stones, so that I used contrast colors to distinguish the originally messy scenes.

The night scene portrait illuminates the character with the warm color of the light, making the character stand out from the dark environment, in order to highlight the main body.

Hong Kong Fei Ngo Shan flight, I want to express the artistic conception of the character overlooking Victoria Harbour from the top of the hill, so use the red tent as a point of interest to guide the vision, so that the observer will first notice the character on the top of the mountain, and then follow the direction of the character to the distant city harbour.

In Chile's Bainai National Park, the light of sunrise shines on the snow-capped mountains, the air humidity is high to form a rainbow, and the whole scene itself is warm, but I later processed it into a warm highlight and a cold dark part, emphasizing the difference between highlights and shadows.

When shooting at the best time when the moon rises, the moonlight illuminates the ground and the sky is blue, so there is a cold and warm contrast, and the sensitivity can be reduced a lot.

The above are all blue and yellow, and there are also some cases of red and green.

Autumn 4, the secret territory of Patagonia, separate complementary colors with both adjacent colors and contrast colors, which is called separated complementary colors. This is a neutral collocation method, with a slight contrast in softness, without particularly prominent color features.

This kind of color matching not only has the aesthetic feeling of low contrast of analogous color, but also has the power sense of complementary color. A harmonious and focused color relationship has been formed.

This is taken in Chengde prairie, the blue sky and the yellow grass in the foreground are cold and warm, and the green in the middle is a transitional color, sandwiched between the contrast colors, making the overall color more neutral.

This is a portrait shot in Gulangyu, with yellow light, green leaves, bluish blue dark parts and costumes, as well as a combination of blue, green and yellow, which is similar to the postcard scenery, with harmonious colors.

So when shooting during the day, there is no strong sunset or sunrise light, and many scenes are close to separate complementary colors, which is why daytime shooting is not very attractive.
