In their latest report, the research institute predicts that the global smartphone market will shrink significantly this year, with shipments of 1.425 billion units, down 18% from the same period last year.

Shipments of smartphones are expected to fall sharply from a year earlier, meaning demand for panels, a key component, will also decline.

However, the research institute also said in the report that while smartphone demand for panels will decline, shipments of smartphone panels such as the LTPO-AMOLED are expected to increase significantly, reaching 148 million this year, up 94 per cent from a year earlier.

Shipments of smartphone panels will fall sharply in the LTPS AMOLED and LCD categories. The research firm expects shipments of LTPS AMOLED smartphone panels to fall 19% this year to 44 million, while shipments of LCD panels will fall 26% year-on-year.

The sharp increase in shipments of LTPO-AMOLED panels will also boost revenues for manufacturers, which are currently made mainly by Samsung and LG displays, and researchers expect their share of panel revenue to rise from 58 per cent last year to 64 per cent.
