On November 19, a special offline competition of "Fortnite" was held in an e-sports cafe in Shibuya, Japan. The rules of the game are very simple. Players only need to control the characters to run from the starting point to the finish line, but unlike regular competitive events, almost all the contestants in this competition are physically handicapped, and the way they participate in the competition is to use their own brainwaves to control the characters to move forward.

The competition was organized by a cattle farm research team from the Department of Science and Engineering of Keio University in Japan. In order to publicize the research achievements of the promotion team in brain-computer interface over the years, and to draw more attention to disabled people with mobility disabilities, neuroscientist Niu Chang Runyi and his team specially catered to the trend of young people. the event was held in the form of an e-sports competition.

In recent years, brain-computer interface has been a cutting-edge topic in the field of scientific research, and many organizations around the world are actively promoting related research. The professor of cattle farm began to dabble in the development of brain-computer interface in 2006. after more than a decade of painstaking research, they successfully plugged the brainwave receiver into a headset device similar to headphones, which not only ensures beauty, but also makes it easy for users to wear.

According to the cattle farm professor, their "headset" brain-computer interface is actually not complicated. Three brainwave sensors are placed on the top of the user's head and on the left and right sides respectively. By analyzing the brain waves of motor instructions issued by the brain, with the help of AI, the operation that the user wants to perform can be projected into the computer.

Although their brain-computer interface has been put into use in the cattle farm, it is by no means easy to play games with their minds. In fact, only two of the five contestants who participated in the competition completed the not-so-long journey, and in an interview after the event, one of the eliminated contestants talked about his own experience: "think 'move!' it's really moving, but if you want to turn, it's always bad, it's too difficult."

However, this demonstration of brain-computer interface is not limited to games, for patients with diseases who are unable to move the whole body, the necessary mobile tools in life may be a rigid need. In the competition field, the scooters taken by the contestants are also driven by brainwaves, which can meet the most basic daily needs in terms of actual performance.

According to the cattle farm professor, he thinks the brain-computer interface is similar to VR. Training brainwaves in a virtual world like "Fortnite" can not only avoid the risk of injury, but also bring happiness to training, and can also reflect the training results to the real world, although the current brainwave detection technology still needs to be improved. But the step from zero to one is still very important.

"We hope that everyone can enjoy their own fun on the same platform in the future, regardless of whether they are disabled or their brains or bodies are defective or not. Diversity, fairness and inclusiveness are all critical, and achieving such a future in the form of brain-computer interfaces is what we are striving to pursue."
