In 2021, the State intellectual property Office of China handled 1.59 million patent applications, a number similar to the total number of 12 offices ranked second to 13th. After China, the United States, Japan, South Korea and the European Patent Office were 591000, 289000, 238000 and 189000 respectively.

In its press release, WIPO highlighted Asia's contribution to global patent applications in 2021. According to WIPO, patent filings in China, South Korea and India grew strongly in 2021, up 5.5 per cent, 2.5 per cent and 5.5 per cent year-on-year, respectively, driving global patent filings and pushing Asian filings beyond the global total of 2max.

The number of valid patents worldwide was about 16.5 million by 2021, an increase of 4.2 per cent year-on-year, according to the report. Among them, the number of valid patents in China reached 3.6 million, surpassing the United States to become the country with the largest number of valid patents in 2021.
