On November 25, EU Justice Minister Didier Reinders (Didier Reynders) said on Thursday that social media Twitter's decision to close its Brussels office and fire thousands of employees raised concerns about the company's ability to comply with the upcoming Digital Services Act (Digital Services Act).

The European Union is about to introduce strict new rules on illegal online content. An European Commission official said Reyndles met with company representatives at Twitter's European headquarters in Dublin and asked for clarification on Twitter-related measures.

Twitter representatives reiterated the company's commitment to ensure full compliance with EU regulations. The EU official said Reinders specifically emphasized compliance with the rules and asked Twitter to translate its commitments into concrete measures.

The Digital Services Act, which will take effect in February 2024, requires online platforms to strengthen the regulation of illegal online content or face a fine of 6% of global annual turnover.

After billionaire Elon Musk took over Twitter last month, the company fired executives almost without warning and laid off large numbers of staff. About half of the company's employees have been laid off and more than 1000 have resigned.

The last two Twitter employees working in Brussels have also left the company, according to a person familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity. Only six members of the team discussed policy and regulatory issues with European Commission officials.

Randers also warned Twitter and other technology companies to do more to deal with bad online content. The latest data show that these companies have deleted less undesirable content this year than in previous years.
