CTOnews.com November 24, Jon Peddie Research (JPR) released its full GPU graphics card market share report for the third quarter of 2022, including AMD, Intel and Nvidia's GPU. Despite declining GPU shipments, Nvidia's independent GPU graphics card market share has soared, while AMD has fallen to single digits.

In the third quarter of 2022, total PC GPU shipments decreased by-25.1% (Y / Y), including desktop graphics cards by-15.43% and notebook graphics cards by-30%. It is considered to be the "biggest drop since 2009".

CTOnews.com learned that the report showed that shipments of Q3 independent GPU fell to 14 million units in 2022, compared with 24 million the previous year. If you take into account that the third quarter is usually the strongest quarter for personal computer growth, the figure fell by-41.6%, a huge drop. In the quarter, Nvidia managed to increase its market share to a record 88 per cent, followed by AMD, which fell to just 8 per cent. Intel more or less maintained a 4% share, down 1% from the previous quarter, but with solid growth of 4-5% compared with last year.

GPU shipments on the market rose sharply in just two years, thanks to the cryptocurrency boom, but have been declining since then, with shipments of less than 100m units, falling across all market segments. GPU shipments of desktops and laptops have declined overwhelmingly, while integrated graphics cards for desktops and laptops remain stable, consistent with previous years.

For GPU share statistics for single desktops and laptops, desktops fared slightly better, with shipments rising slightly from 2600 million in the previous quarter to 28 million in the current quarter. Notebooks saw the biggest decline, from 58 million in the previous quarter to 48 million in the current quarter.

The market for desktop independent GPU graphics cards fell again to only 7 million units, down from 10 million in the previous quarter and 13 million in the previous year. At the same time, shipments of integrated GPU on desktops increased from 15% (Q / Q) and 20% (Y / Y) to 21 million in the third quarter of 2022. So far, the total shipments of PC iGPU are about 62 million units, while the total shipments of PC dGPU are about 14 million units.

AMD and Nvidia have been trying to clear the inventory of the previous generation of GPU to make room for the next generation of GPU. Although Nvidia has launched two next-generation products, the GeForce RTX 4090 and the RTX 4080, they are positioned as super enthusiasts, priced above $1200. So far, the team has shipped more than 150000 RTX 40 GPU units, one of which is not popular. The company is still trying to clear its inventory of older RTX 30 series graphics cards by reshaping the specifications and promotions of its mainstream RTX 3060 and 3070 series graphics cards, as the RTX 40 series mainstream graphics cards will be launched in a few months.

On the other hand, AMD is doing the same thing, but currently the ASP of Nvidia graphics cards is much higher than that of AMD Radeon. AMD will also launch its next generation of Radeon RX 7000 series graphics cards, which are expected to offer better prices than Nvidia's high-end products, but it remains to be seen. Intel, on the other hand, has just launched a high-end Arc for desktops and will soon introduce laptop graphics cards. Intel wants Arc to enter millions of PC each year, but Arc's first year was not as smooth as expected, gaining a share of 4-5% in a year.
