In the later revision, adjusting the exposure is the most basic link, but it is not that simple. We need to adjust according to the reasonable light and shade level of the picture, and we can't destroy the logical order. In this tutorial, I will talk about how to scientifically divide the light and shade level of the picture.

Our process of revising the picture is to adjust the light first and then adjust the color, because the color in photography can only be displayed by lightness, so there is light and color. Usually brighten the dark areas, lower the highlights, or make some partition adjustments with the mask in the ACR.

However, when adjusting the exposure, no matter how to adjust the light and shade, we must distinguish the level of brightness according to the logical level of light and shade in the scene, and cannot overstep it. Even if the dark part is brightened, the dark part is always the dark part, which cannot exceed the exposure of the bright part. Only in this way can the picture be molded truly. Sometimes some students have no problem in revising the picture, but the picture just looks unnatural, often because the relationship between light and shade is unreasonable.

Let me give you an example of how to analyze the levels of light and shade.

First of all, clear light-receiving surface and backlit surface, such as this scene with a clear light source, there will be a very obvious light-receiving and backlit surface, which is the first to be divided into large levels.

Then, in the light-receiving surface, distinguish the more detailed levels.

1. The light source is the brightest. Nothing can be brighter than the light source.

2. The right arm and skirt closest to the lamp are the second in brightness.

3. The reef under the lamp is a little darker, because the area under the lamp is not completely direct.

4. The other light-receiving surfaces on the right side of the person are slightly darker than the above three points, because they are farther away from the light source.

Then deal with the backlit surface and the illuminated surface.

1. In this single light source scene, everything in the backlit surface is darker than the lighted surface, so the skin, clothes and even hair on the left side of the character are slightly darker than those on the right side, and the bright part of the character cannot be adjusted evenly.

2, the reef outside the character, because it is far away from the light source, so the brightness will slowly weaken, and the brightness of the foreground reef at the bottom of the picture is darker than the reef below the character.

3. The reflection in the water must be dimmer than the real thing, because this kind of sea water is not calm, the water surface with waves belongs to diffuse reflection, and the light will diverge in other directions, not completely into the lens.

So we first distinguish between the light-receiving surface and the backlight surface, and then carefully divide the more detailed brightness level inside the light-receiving surface, the closer to the light source, the brighter and brighter the backlight surface as a whole is darker than the light-receiving surface. the surrounding environment is divided into brightness according to the distance from the light source and whether there is occlusion or not. In the revision of the picture, even if the overall brightening exposure, but also to follow this level of brightness, the brightness of each part can not exceed the level.

This case wants to tell you that the details should also have a level of light and shade. The frame of the doorway has three sides: the left, the top and the right, and the light source enters from the top right of the picture, so it has different effects on the brightness of the three sides of the doorway.

1. The left door frame receives direct light and is the brightest.

2. The right door frame is side light, slightly darker.

3. The upper door frame is backlit and the darkest

When we modify the picture or reshape the light and shadow, we should not only look at the whole, but also analyze the relationship between the light and shade of the details, because the light is invisible, the light is transparent, and we want to express a clear direction of light. it depends on the light and shade of each object to indirectly tell the observer what the light is like. Just like the wind is also invisible, want to express the state of the wind, through the surface of the water, plants fluttering with the wind and other details.

In this case, let's talk about projection and reflection.

This picture is a single direct light source and has a very clear light direction, so it will form an obvious projection area on the left side of the character, that is, the shadow.

In such a single direct light scene, the projection is the darkest part around the subject, and no other object can be darker than the projection.

But you will find that the character's legs are under the skirt and belong to a completely backlit area, but there are bright details. This is because the brightness of the legs depends on the reflection of the ground. Although it is a concrete floor, part of the light will still be reflected to illuminate the legs.

Then some people will ask, why is the shadow of the ground not affected by the reflection of the ground? Because the shadow and the ground belong to the same plane, in the same plane, can not reflect each other, so there is no external conditions in the scene can add light to the projection area, the shadow is darker than the character's backlit surface.

This picture is a typical case of environmental reflection. The green arrow is the direction of the light source, but the building as a whole is a glass curtain wall with a large degree of reflection, so it is reflected to the other side in the direction of the red arrow, and there is also a warm light color, but the brightness of the reflective surface is slightly darker than that of the illuminated surface.

Then other areas will also have a certain degree of reflection, but the degree is weak, so there is no obvious warm light in other areas, most of which are the blue of glass curtain walls.

After talking about some common cases of the relationship between light and shade, in the process of revising the picture, it does not mean that we need to adjust the light and shade in one step during the initial adjustment of ACR, because we may need to adjust the exposure evenly, and then carry out steps such as color deviation correction, noise reduction or debris removal.

So we can adjust the basic exposure of ACR, first adjust the overall exposure evenly, deal with some defects, and then use the mask tool or deepen the dodge brush to partially reshape the light and shade, and return to the light and shade level it should have.
