On Nov. 24, Twitter's New York office buffet changed Monday as its new boss, Elon Musk, began to cut back on the company's operating costs, leaving no grilled shrimp and other meals on the menu.

One employee said the restaurant served only two kinds of macaroni, cheese and buffet salad on Monday, but no meals such as grilled shrimp.

Musk has previously disagreed with the free meals Twitter offers to employees. He had previously claimed that the company spent $400 on every free employee lunch.

The claim was refuted by former Twitter employee Tracy Hawkins, who called Musk's claim a "lie".

"We each spend between $20 and $25 a day for breakfast and lunch," Hawkins said on Twitter. "this allows employees to continue to concentrate on their work. Office attendance is between 20% and 50%."

An internal email to Twitter employees shows that Twitter's free food and drinks are shifting to a "partial payment" model.

In the future, most Twitter employees will have to buy most of the meals provided by the company out of their own pocket, and Twitter will no longer pay for the department's team-building activities, according to people familiar with the matter.

Emails sent to employees show that Twitter will re-evaluate the level of subsidies paid to employees in the future and may reissue them when the company's financial situation improves.

Twitter representatives didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
